Editorial cartoon: a hospital maternity ward run as a military checkpoint. Donald Trump signs a stack of executive orders at a folding table wedged between incubators, while a federal agent in a tactical vest leans over a bassinet with a clipboard, taking details from a swaddled newborn whose intake card reads INVADING FORCE.

Donald Trump signed two executive orders on 6 August 2026 seeking to limit US birthright citizenship, weeks after the Supreme Court upheld it 6-3. One order seeks to expand the narrow existing exception that bars citizenship for babies of foreign diplomats or invading forces; the second directs the secretary of state and secretary of homeland security to halt 'birth tourism'. In June, Chief Justice John Roberts wrote there was 'scant evidence for this dramatically revisionist view'; the new orders are expected to face legal challenges.
