Day four. The system worked.

National Alert System

August 12, 2026 · Ibid.

A dim government crisis room at dawn: a wall of thirty dead, unplugged monitors, and taped to the exact centre of it a single cracked mobile phone showing a Google Alert. A clerk on a stepladder presses down the last strip of tape. In the foreground, Colombia's four-day-old president signs an emergency decree without looking up, asking for the phone's serial number. An empty console beneath the screens is stencilled CHOCO.

A 7.4 magnitude earthquake in northwestern Colombia on Monday killed more than 160 people, with the epicenter about three miles from San Jose del Palmar in Choco. Several top floors of Cali's main hospital collapsed, trapping patients, and Pereira in Risaralda was among the hardest hit. President Abelardo de la Espriella, sworn in three days earlier, declared a state of emergency; one Cali survivor said the only warning received came from a Google Alert on a phone.
