Oath of Office

August 12, 2026 · Ibid.

Editorial cartoon: rows of new ICE officers raise their right hands at a mass swearing-in, every hand sheathed in a bulky wired glove with a small green indicator lamp, wires running to battery boxes on their belts. Kristi Noem reads from a card at a lectern marked NOEM while an aide lifts a spare glove from a foreground crate stencilled LESS LETHAL.

The Associated Press reports that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement plans to issue its officers gloves capable of delivering painful electric shocks. The device is worn on the hand, so the shock travels through an officer's own grip or touch. The purchase is an agency procurement decision made during ICE's mass-deportation enforcement surge; such equipment is typically defended in the vocabulary of less-lethal, compliance and de-escalation tools.
