Polls closed at 22:00 BST in the Clacton by-election, where Nigel Farage is standing against a record 34 candidates. The 79,785 registered voters at 51 polling stations were handed the longest ballot paper in British electoral history, measuring 90cm — about 3ft. Voters had to present photo ID, and an overnight count followed; the field included two Official Monster Raving Loony Party candidates.
