The Denial Log

August 16, 2026 · Ibid.

Editorial cartoon: in a courtroom a towering U.S. Marshal holds up a clipboard facing the reader reading 'IBUPROFEN — DENIED' and 'HUG — DENIED', his other forearm barring a teenage boy who stands with arms already open; the judge leans far off the bench pleading, and behind them a journalist in a detention uniform sits with a swollen, unbandaged purple arm.

Independent Los Angeles journalist Carlitos Ricardo Parias passed 300 days in ICE detention at Adelanto, California, on Monday, longer than any recorded modern US journalist detention. Federal agents shot him in the elbow during an October 2025 vehicle stop, and he says the wound is untreated and his arm is discoloring. At his first hearing a judge asked a U.S. marshal to expedite his prescribed high-dose ibuprofen and the marshal refused; the marshal also barred his teenage son from hugging him, citing security protocol.
