Table for Two

August 17, 2026 · Ibid.

Editorial cartoon: on a warship deck dressed for a surrender ceremony, Donald Trump sits alone with arms crossed at a baize signing table set with an inkwell, an unsigned folder, a folded white flag and a place card reading IRAN before an empty gilt chair, while a labelled Pete Hegseth checks his watch and gulls doze on months-old bunting.

The US–Iran memorandum of understanding aimed at ending hostilities expired on 17 August 2026, with neither side willing to extend it. In a Fox News interview Trump demanded Iran "put up the white flag of surrender," said he had "no time schedule," and threatened to bomb US ally Oman over the Iranian-blockaded Strait of Hormuz, which he said he would declare US territory. The same weekend he ordered Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to substantially reduce the Ulchi Freedom Shield exercises with South Korea, citing his relationship with Kim Jong-un.
